A Macomb County educator, Adam Kosi, has been recognized with the Excellence in Education award by the Michigan Lottery for his efforts in making band participation accessible to all students. Kosi teaches band at L’Anse Creuse Middle School-East, part of L’Anse Creuse Public Schools.
The Excellence in Education awards were introduced by the Michigan Lottery in 2014 to honor outstanding public-school educators across the state. Each weekly award winner receives a $2,000 cash prize and is featured on several media partner stations including WXYZ-TV in Detroit and FOX 17 in Grand Rapids. One of these winners will be chosen as Educator of the Year at the end of the school year, receiving an additional $10,000 cash prize.
Lottery Commissioner Suzanna Shkreli commented on Kosi's impact: “Providing students with opportunities to express themselves through music is an important aspect of their education journey.” She praised him for ensuring music education is accessible to all students at his school.
Kosi shared that his own experience with band teachers inspired him to pursue teaching. He said: “I chose to pursue a career in education because of the profound impact my band teachers had on me.”
Nominated by a colleague, Kosi was described as "a phenomenal teacher and human being" who ensures economic barriers do not prevent students from joining band classes. He collaborates with local music stores to make instruments affordable for families facing financial difficulties.
His commitment has led former students to return and assist current ones, demonstrating strong community ties. Recently, he guided eighth-grade students to achieve a historic rating at a state competition.
Kosi holds degrees from Eastern Michigan University and Saginaw Valley State University and has been teaching for 24 years, spending six years at his current post.
The Excellence in Education award evaluates nominees based on excellence, dedication, inspiration, leadership, and effectiveness within their educational roles.
