Next week, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) will participate in National Invasive Species Awareness Week (NISAW), scheduled from February 24 to 28, 2025. This annual event aims to raise awareness about invasive species and their impact on the environment and economy. It also encourages individuals and communities to take action to protect natural resources.
Invasive species include non-native plants, animals, insects, and pathogens that can disrupt ecosystems, harm agriculture, and pose risks to health. These species often grow rapidly without natural predators in new habitats.
“Invasive species are responsible for an estimated $26 billion in economic damage and control efforts each year in North America,” said MDARD Director Tim Boring. “As stewards of Michigan’s natural resources, this national awareness week is the perfect time to remind ourselves of ways to help limit the spread of invasive species in our state.”
MDARD collaborates with local, state, and federal agencies as well as private landowners and community organizations through Michigan’s Invasive Species Program. These partnerships aim to prevent the spread of invasive species by identifying, managing, and reducing their impact across Michigan.
Residents can contribute by taking simple steps such as familiarizing themselves with Michigan’s invasive species watchlist, landscaping with native plants, purchasing heat-treated firewood locally, declaring agricultural items when returning from international travel, avoiding online purchases from unverified sources that may introduce non-native species, and inspecting gear after outdoor activities.
MDARD offers resources like the Buggin’ Out video series for more information on threats posed by invasive pests. Signs of invasive plant pests can be reported via the Michigan Invasive Species website or by calling 800-292-3939.
