NMU ski team triumphs at Midwest Regional Championships

The Northern Michigan University (NMU) alpine ski team achieved a significant victory at the 2025 Midwest Regional Championships in Marquette, Michigan. The team secured 16 of the top 20 finishes, demonstrating their dominance in the competition.

The women's team finished first with a combined time of 3:17.29, capturing the top two podium positions. They claimed nine of the top ten spots overall. Tommie Springer took gold in the giant slalom on day two, after finishing fifth previously. Her total time was 1:05.45, following an impressive start with the fastest run of 29.34 and a second run of 36.11.

Reagan Olli followed her previous gold medal performance with a silver medal, just behind Springer by 0.19 seconds with a time of 1:05.66. She had the second-fastest first run and led in the second run with a time of 35.84.

Ainsley Kirk narrowly missed a podium finish, placing fourth with a time of 1:06.18, only 0.23 seconds away from third place. Maddy Stern placed fifth, while Erin Hoelzel, Onalee Wallis, Emily Creek, Ella Wichert, and Marisa Witte rounded out the top ten for NMU.

The men's team also performed exceptionally well by sweeping the podium and taking seven of the top ten spots to secure another team win.

Anthony Petkov won gold in the giant slalom after finishing fifth previously; his final time was 1:03.64 after leading in both runs with times of 35.04 and 28.60 respectively.

Andrew Truman claimed silver just behind Petkov by 0.08 seconds with his total time being 1:03.72; he had an outstanding second run that was the fastest of the day at 28.21.

Reed Heathman completed NMU's podium sweep by winning bronze; he improved from fourth place after his first run to finish strong with a second-run time of 28.65.

Aaron Grzelak finished fourth while Will Blackmer came sixth; Mitchell Forsberg and Nathan Dehart completed NMU's presence in eighth and ninth places respectively.

Looking ahead, NMU will participate in three weeks at Mt Bachelor in Bend Oregon for USCSA National Championship.
