The Northern Michigan University women's basketball team secured a decisive victory over Lake Superior State, extending their winning streak to four games. The Wildcats won 67-44, controlling the game after an early lead by the Lakers.
In the first half, NMU held the Lakers to under 25% shooting in the second and third quarters while maintaining at least 50% shooting in both the first and second quarters. The Wildcats shot 27-59 (45.8%) overall compared to LSSU's 17-56 (30.4%). Despite both teams having three-point percentages of 25% or less, NMU forced 16 turnovers from the Lakers, converting them into 14 points. They also out-rebounded LSSU 44-32 and dominated scoring in the paint with a margin of 44-20.
Freshman Sydney Whitehouse led NMU with a season-high of 17 points on 6-8 shooting. Alyssa Hill added 14 points, and Jacy Weisbrod contributed 13 points with a strong performance from beyond the arc. All twelve Wildcats players recorded at least one rebound, and eleven scored during the game.
The game began slowly for NMU as they conceded the first two points but quickly responded with a three-pointer from Weisbrod. After trailing briefly at 8-4, baskets from Mackenzie Holzwart and Alyssa Hill put NMU back in front as part of an eight-point run.
By halftime, Northern led comfortably at 39-23 after shooting efficiently in both quarters. The third quarter saw Hill score three consecutive baskets, extending NMU's lead to over twenty points for the first time. Strong defensive efforts limited LSSU to just six points in that period.
In the final quarter, Whitehouse continued her impactful play alongside Madison Schroeder and Ava Bates, helping secure a significant victory margin for NMU.
Northern Michigan improved their record to 17-6 overall and 11-4 in conference play, while Lake Superior State fell to a record of 5-18 overall and 2-13 within GLIAC competition.
Next up for NMU is a matchup against Ferris State on Saturday at 1 p.m., where both teams will participate in supporting the Play4Kay fundraiser as Northern also honors its seniors.
