Attorney General resolves fraudulent pet adoption case with Oshtemo Township resident

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has concluded an investigation into fraudulent activities related to pet adoption. The case involved Paige Harkema from Oshtemo Township, who used the alias "Abby Stratiskii" to falsify vaccination records for a dog she sold. The investigation was settled through an Assurance of Voluntary Compliance and Discontinuance filed in the 30th Judicial Circuit Court in Ingham County.

The investigation began after Harkema listed her dog "Toby" for adoption on RescueMe.org in May 2024, citing an eviction notice due to his barking as the reason for rehoming him. Using her alias, she received a $250 adoption fee from two Michigan consumers and provided them with falsified veterinary records.

Under the terms of the settlement, Harkema is required to stop engaging in deceptive practices and comply with the Michigan Consumer Protection Act (MCPA). She agreed not to falsify veterinary records or post animals for sale on RescueMe.org again. Additionally, she cannot sell or offer any companion animal for private adoption for ten years.

Harkema will pay $2,000 as part of the settlement, which will be available to consumers who can substantiate claims against her.

Nessel advised potential adopters to exercise caution when adopting pets online: “Adopting a pet in need can be a rewarding experience, but always remember to be cautious, especially when adopting online.” She urged anyone who believes they were deceived by Harkema during a pet purchase to contact her office.

To help prevent similar scams, Nessel's office is reissuing its consumer alert on puppy scams and encourages those affected by Harkema's actions to reach out to the Department’s Consumer Protection Team.
