The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is set to host an open house on February 11, 2025, in Traverse City. The event aims to discuss the upcoming reconstruction project for M-72 (Grandview Parkway) and M-22 (Bay Shore Drive), stretching from US-31 (Division Street) in Traverse City to Cherry Bend Road in Elmwood Township.
Community members, city representatives, local businesses, interested residents, MDOT staff, and contractors are invited to attend the meeting at the MDOT Traverse City Transportation Service Center. The session will run from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
MDOT has outlined plans for a comprehensive overhaul of a 2.2-mile section of the roadways. The project will involve removing existing concrete and composite pavements and restoring surface conditions to improve ride quality. Additional improvements include drainage enhancements with new curb and gutter installations, storm sewer upgrades, culverts replacement, public transit stop improvements, and constructing a roundabout at the intersection of M-72/M-22 that includes Bay Street.
Traffic signal upgrades at Cherry Bend Road are also part of the plan alongside efforts to enhance driveway access management where feasible. To improve pedestrian safety, hybrid beacon signals known as High-Intensity Activated CrossWalK (HAWK) signals will be installed near key locations such as Discovery Pier and Elmwood Township Marina.
Sidewalks or shared-use paths along both sides of the roadway will be replaced or extended with all ramps updated to meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards. Pedestrian refuge islands will be constructed at crossings between Carter Road and Rennie Road.
The project is scheduled to commence in mid-April but may start earlier if weather permits. Completion is expected by November.
