The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has scheduled a public meeting on February 12 to discuss plans for the upcoming US-23 project in Tawas City and East Tawas. The project, slated for 2027, involves rebuilding a section of the highway and aims to improve traffic flow and infrastructure in the area.
MDOT representatives, along with consultants, will present findings from a recent traffic impact study and discuss potential roadway concepts during the meeting. The event is open to community members, city representatives, local businesses, interested residents, MDOT staff, consultants, and contractors.
The meeting will take place at East Tawas City Hall from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, February 12. Accessibility arrangements can be made by contacting Orlando Curry at least five business days before the meeting.
MDOT plans to invest $24.6 million into rebuilding a 3.2-mile stretch of US-23 in Iosco County. This includes new pavement and sidewalks as well as improvements to storm sewers and landscaping. Additionally, Tawas City and East Tawas are funding water main replacements and sanitary sewer line installations as part of the project.
A proposed lane conversion aims to reduce the current four-lane configuration down to three lanes between North Street and Tawas Beach Road. More details on lane conversions are available on the Federal Highway Administration website.
Public comments on this proposal can be submitted through an online form on MDOT's website until February 28.
