The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is marking Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) Month this January by collaborating with partners across the state. The department encourages community partners and advocates to use the hashtag #MISDOHMonth2025 for events, webinars, or activities aimed at promoting health equity and SDOH work in Michigan.

Elizabeth Hertel, MDHHS director, emphasized the importance of collective efforts in improving health outcomes. "As we recognize Social Determinants of Health Month, it’s a good time to acknowledge the vital role each of us plays in creating a healthier, more equitable Michigan," she stated. "The department remains committed to fostering partnerships and promoting health equity across the state. Addressing the social factors that shape health outcomes is critical to eliminating health disparities and ensuring all residents have the opportunity to thrive."

Social Determinants of Health encompass factors such as income, education, job security, food security, and housing that significantly impact individual and community well-being. Disparities in these areas can lead to preventable health inequities. MDHHS aims to enhance residents' health, safety, and stability through services and programs that improve SDOH.

Phase III of Michigan’s Roadmap to Healthy Communities is ongoing, focusing on initiatives like SDOH Hubs and efforts to reduce health disparities. These initiatives support community-driven solutions for promoting health equity statewide.

The annual MDOH Summit acts as a platform for advancing SDOH strategies. In 2025, an evaluation year will assess current efforts' impacts and identify growth opportunities. Findings will be shared at the 2026 Summit scheduled for June 2026.

An online toolkit with resources such as graphics and social media posts is available to help promote SDOH Month. MDHHS encourages sharing local efforts addressing SDOH via email at MDHHS-SDOH-PolicyandPlanning@Michigan.gov or on social media using #MISDOHMonth2025.
