During a forum of Michigan Democratic Party (MDP) chair candidates, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan was the focus of sharp criticism. Candidate Curtis Hertel Jr. remarked that Democrats "have to be willing to punch him in the mouth, and say exactly who he is."

Hertel argued against Duggan's attempt to position himself as an independent, saying, "The idea that Duggan is trying to run as an independent is absolutely wrong." He added, "We have seen people before that run populist campaigns paid for by billionaires. That’s what Mike Duggan is."

In December, Duggan announced his candidacy for governor in 2026 as an independent. Analysts suggest this move could help him avoid a competitive Democratic primary while appealing to centrist voters.

The forum, hosted by the Washtenaw County Democratic Party in Ann Arbor, highlighted how opposing Duggan might become a priority for the next party leader. Hertel criticized Duggan's past appearances with the Democratic National Committee and Vice President events but now perceives him as using "right-wing tropes" against the party.

Vincent Elie, a Democratic precinct delegate from Chelsea, questioned how candidates would address Duggan's departure from the party. Lavora Barnes announced she would not seek re-election as MDP chair after November elections; her successor will be chosen at the spring convention on Feb. 22.

Hertel leads candidate recruitment efforts for Democrats and previously served as state senator and legislative affairs director for the Governor. His rivals include Mark Ludwig and Al Williams.

Williams described Duggan as "the fox in the hen house," accusing him of exploiting Democratic ties during his time as Wayne County prosecutor in 2000. He expressed feeling betrayed by Duggan's actions: "To let him and his son into the hen house... I’m upset about that." Williams aims to defeat Duggan if elected MDP chair.

MIRS contacted Duggan's campaign regarding these remarks but received only this response: "And they wonder why so many people are tired of the two parties?"

At the event, Hertel suggested establishing regional donor tables and employing year-round organizers instead of relying on out-of-state staff during elections. Ludwig criticized current party operations: "Our employees lack direction," emphasizing issues with volunteer engagement and fundraising being undermined by third parties.

Ludwig also addressed Hertel directly: becoming MDP chair should not be Hertel’s fallback after losing a congressional race last year.
