The Northern Michigan University (NMU) athletic teams had a busy weekend from December 12 to December 15, participating in various sports events.
On Thursday, the Men's Nordic team competed in the Gitchi Gami Games Day One with Luke Fricker posting a time of 2:44.89 in his quarterfinal heat during the Freestyle Sprint. Although he did not advance, he qualified with a time of 2:47.99, placing him 18th overall and eighth among athletes under 23. The Women's Nordic team saw Nilssen, Niznik, and Harvey not start their event.
Friday's hockey game ended in a 2-0 loss against Bowling Green. Ryan Ouellette made an impressive performance with 31 saves and a .969 save percentage.
Saturday witnessed another hockey match where NMU lost to Bowling Green with a score of 4-3. Aidyn Hutchinson contributed one goal and one assist, Jakub Lewandowski added two assists, while Jesse Tucker and Anthony Cliche each scored one goal.
In men's basketball on Saturday, NMU secured a victory over Upper Iowa with a final score of 79-76 after experiencing numerous lead changes and ties throughout the game. Julien Smith and Dylan Kuehl were pivotal in scoring NMU's final points.
The Men's Nordic team continued at the Gitchi Gami Games Day Two - Classic Sprint on Saturday. Luke Fricker advanced to the quarterfinals but finished fifth in his heat. Jonathan Clarke, Hendrik Peterson, and Adrik Kraftson also participated with respective times posted for their runs.
For Women's Nordic on Day Two - Classic Sprint, Henriette Nilssen reached her semifinal heat finishing second initially before securing the twelfth spot overall. Jordan Parent and Pearl Harvey also competed but did not advance beyond their heats.
Sunday featured Swim and Dive participation at CSCAA Open Water Collegiate Nationals where Wyatt Dickman ranked eleventh among Division II athletes. Zachary Billotte followed closely behind at fourteenth place within Division II competitors while Anika Wright was fourth among all D2 athletes.
In Men's Nordic competition on Sunday during Day Three - Freestyle 10km event at Gitchi Gami Games; Luke Fricker achieved ninth position amongst collegiate participants alongside other noteworthy placements by teammates such as Henriette Nilssen who finished sixth both collegiately as well as under-23 categories respectively along Pearl Harvey’s strong showing within senior divisions too!
Finally concluding this action-packed weekend was wrestling participation held through North Central College Invitational resulting into Clarissa Wangen leading way via multiple victories including contributions from fellow wrestlers Ruby Joseph & Mickaela Keane securing wins across different weight classes contributing towards team's efforts collectively altogether wrapping up eventful period filled diverse sporting activities showcasing talents across board representing Northern Michigan University athletics proudly!
