The NMU men's hockey team faced a narrow defeat against the Ferris State Bulldogs, ending with a score of 2-1 on Saturday night. The Wildcats' record now stands at 1-14-1 overall and 0-9-1 in conference play.
Matthew Romer was the sole goal scorer for the Wildcats, marking his third goal of the season. He received assists from teammates Jakub Lewandowski and Danny Ciccarello. Despite their efforts, the Wildcats struggled on power plays, failing to capitalize on five opportunities while successfully killing three out of four penalties.
Looking ahead, NMU will continue its CCHA play with an upcoming trip to Bowling Green to face off against the Falcons next weekend.
In the game recap, NMU had an early scoring opportunity in the first period with a two-on-one rush. Browne passed to Michaelis, but West made a sprawling save for Ferris State. Later in the period, a peculiar sequence occurred when Ferris State scored during a power play without detection by officials. The clock was reset after this undetected goal gave them a 1-0 lead.
Midway through the second period, Romer attempted another setup from the left sideboard to Daul at the right point, but West again made a crucial save for Ferris State. The Bulldogs extended their lead later in this period following a quick rush up ice that resulted in Doell scoring after Ouellette initially handled a backhand shot.
The Wildcats responded just before halftime as Ciccarello maneuvered past defenders and passed to Lewandowski who then assisted Romer for NMU's only goal of night reducing deficit down by one point going into intermission break.
Early into final period saw 'Cats whistled for penalty which they managed kill thanks largely due pair glove saves from Ouellette stopping shots close range keeping them within striking distance until end match where despite several chances including last minute power-play opportunity failed convert leaving score unchanged concluding contest at 2–1 favoring visitors' side .
