Northern Michigan women's wrestling team faces UW-Oshkosh this weekend

The Northern Michigan women's wrestling team is set to compete against UW-Oshkosh in a dual meet this weekend. The event will take place on Friday, December 6, at 6 p.m. ET at the Kolf Sports Center in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

In their last outing, the Wildcats faced Grand Valley on November 16 in Allendale, where they were defeated 44-6. Ozioma Ogu secured five points for NMU with a victory in the 207 weight class. Sophia Bassino contributed one point at 160 despite falling to Clarissa Agostini (TF 14-4 4:16).

The Northern Michigan team features several ranked wrestlers. Yu Sakamoto holds a national ranking of seventh in the 117 weight class and recently achieved world champion status at the U23 World Championships in Albania. Other ranked members include Zhivanna Magdaleno at sixteenth in the 124 weight class, Alissa Caltagirone seventeenth at 145, Sophia Bassino eighteenth at 160, and Ozioma Ogu twentieth at 207.

As a team, Northern Michigan is ranked eighteenth in dual rankings and twenty-third in tournament rankings. Historically, NMU has achieved ten regional top-5 finishes with Diana Dzasezava winning in 2023. Over its three-year history, the program has produced two All-Americans and twelve Scholar All-Americans. In recognition of his contributions to the team's success, Tony Deanda was named Regional Coach of the Year in 2023.
