The NMU men's swim and dive team concluded the first day of competition at the Calvin College Winter Invite in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The team currently holds second place among five teams, with a total of 490.5 points. They trail behind Grand Valley, which leads with 647 points, and are ahead of Calvin University, which has 435 points.
NMU secured podium finishes in five different events on the first day. Seven student-athletes from NMU achieved NCAA D2-B Qualifying Standards during these events.
Leo Nolles was a standout performer for NMU, winning the individual gold in the 50-yard freestyle event. He also contributed to the team's success by anchoring both the second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay and the fourth-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay.
Daniel Lopez Aponte made significant improvements by finishing second in the 200-yard individual medley (IM), shaving off 2:51 from his qualifying time earlier that morning to secure a spot in the A finals.
The Wildcats will continue their participation on day two of the invite, with preliminaries scheduled for 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m., taking place again in Grand Rapids.
