Investing in mental health and safety is essential for creating strong workplaces, a resilient workforce, and thriving communities. The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) has compiled updates and resources focused on enhancing workplace mental health across Michigan. These efforts are centered on three pillars: issues in the workplace, factors affecting the workplace, and individual behavioral health supports.

The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) is collaborating with employers to implement strategies from the Surgeon General’s report. Their 2022 Workplace Mental Health Report outlines effective strategies for creating supportive workplace environments that enhance employee well-being and organizational success.

The U.S. Surgeon General’s Framework emphasizes workplace mental health as a public health priority. It highlights how stressors at work affect employees, business productivity, and the economy. Organizations are encouraged to incorporate mental health strategies that prioritize workers’ needs.

According to statistics, 65% of U.S. employees identify their jobs as their primary source of stress, costing American companies over $300 billion annually due to healthcare costs, absenteeism, and decreased performance. Approximately 40% of employee turnover is attributed to job stress.

In the current workplace landscape, 76% of U.S. workers report experiencing at least one symptom of a mental health condition, while 84% attribute at least one mental health challenge to their workplace conditions. Furthermore, 81% of workers are seeking employers who prioritize mental health support.

Positive trends indicate that employees who feel their employer genuinely cares about their well-being are less likely to seek new jobs or experience burnout and more likely to thrive in their lives.

The report encourages organizations to integrate mental health-focused policies and programs to improve employee well-being and overall business performance. Employers are urged to explore these resources and integrate beneficial mental health strategies.

LEO's Workplace Mental Health Report established a dedicated workgroup collaborating with employers, workers, and professionals to develop strategies promoting mental health in the workplace. The report defines a resilient workplace as one prioritizing both mental and physical well-being.

Depression and anxiety resulting from chronic stress are prevalent issues affecting workplaces; however, less than half receive treatment. The report highlights severe impacts of chronic stress like increased absenteeism, turnover, and presenteeism—when employees are present but not fully functional.

Recommendations for employers include assessing workplace culture using surveys or tools to understand the mental health climate; reviewing policies; enhancing Employee Assistance Programs; engaging employees through resource groups; adding chronic stress as an issue area for health committees.

State-level initiatives suggested by the report include financial support for businesses promoting mental health in workplaces and establishing a resource hub for strategies.

Employers prioritizing mental health can create healthier work environments benefiting everyone involved. The findings underscore proactive measures' importance in addressing workplace mental health fostering a more resilient workforce.
