Northern Michigan wrestlers receive NWCA Scholar All-American honors

The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) has recognized seven members of the Northern Michigan wrestling team as Scholar All-Americans for the 2023-24 academic year. The awards were given to a total of 199 individuals from 47 institutions across the country.

The Northern Michigan wrestlers honored are Marisa Angelos, Alissa Caltagirone, Samantha Chaon, Sharon Leon, Zhivanna Magdaleno, Abigail Swanson, and Trinity Valentin.

Marisa Angelos is pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology and qualified for the NCWWC National Championships after placing second at the Northwest Regional Qualifier. Nursing major Alissa Caltagirone placed fourth at the same qualifier and achieved two wins at the national level.

Freshman Biology major Samantha Chaon also received recognition. Junior Criminal Justice major Sharon Leon secured fifth place at the Northwest Regional Qualifier. Freshman Political Science major Zhivanna Magdaleno was a runner-up at this event and won a match at the National Championships.

Abigail Swanson is studying Biology/Pre-Dentistry as a freshman, while Trinity Valentin is a sophomore focusing on Earth Science.

Mike Moyer, Executive Director of NWCA, praised these athletes for their commitment both academically and athletically. "It's a privilege to acknowledge these remarkable athletes for their exceptional accomplishments," said Moyer. "Congratulations to all the honorees, and we wish them continued success in their academic and athletic pursuits."
