Northern Michigan excels at GLIAC swimming championships

Day three of the GLIAC Swimming and Diving Championships concluded in Holland, Michigan, with notable performances by several athletes. The competition saw two athletes from Northern Michigan University claiming gold medals, setting a new school record, and achieving multiple NCAA Cuts.

Currently, Northern Michigan sits third in the standings with 513.5 points. Grand Valley leads with 706.5 points, followed by Wayne State at 532 points.

Junior Carmilla Carbone secured a gold medal in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 54.44 seconds, which is the third-fastest time nationally. She earned a DII B-Cut and contributed 20 team points. Her teammate, junior Mia Strazny, also reached the podium with her time of 56.15 seconds in the same event, earning a DII B-Cut and 16 team points.

Another standout performance came from junior Zoe DeKievit who topped the podium in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.02 seconds, securing a DII B-Cut and adding another 20 team points to their tally. Sophomore Evelyn DeCarlo finished fifth in this event with a time of 1:04.21 seconds, earning an additional 14 team points.

In other events, fifth-year senior Meritxell Font Cantarero set a new school record while winning silver in the 200 butterfly with her time of 2:01.61 seconds—a DII B-Cut that added another 17 team points.

The team's relay performance was highlighted by Carlotta Santi, Becca Burrows, Anika Wright, and Font Cantarero earning silver in the 800 free relay with their combined time of 7:28.54 seconds—a DII B-Cut that contributed an impressive total of 34 team points.

Freshman Carlotta Santi claimed bronze in the 500 free with her DII B-Cut time of 4:55.7 seconds, bringing home another16 team points for Northern Michigan University. Fellow freshman Anika Wright followed closely behind in fourth place at this event as well as gaining her own DII B-cut scoring further contributions towards collective efforts amounting up till now into final rankings today before last tomorrow when more opportunities arise starting morning sharp ten o'clock featuring various races including meter diving alongside others planned throughout daylong schedule ahead promising yet again fierce competitive spirit continuing among all participants involved aiming high reaching peak performances hoped achieving goals set upon initial participation outset!
