The Northern Michigan University (NMU) cross country team started its 2023 season with a victory at the 5K Northwood Invite in Midland, Michigan. The team was led by Madi Szymanski and Ava Maginity, who secured first and second place respectively.
NMU scored 18 points to secure the top spot, while Northwood followed with 43 points and Alma took third with 83 points. Sophomore Madi Szymanski finished the race in 18:20.8, setting a personal best for her collegiate career in the 5K. Freshman Ava Maginity completed her first collegiate race with a time of 18:41.8, securing second place.
The pair from NMU finished well ahead of other competitors, as the third-place runner from Oakland Community College crossed the line at 19:09.5, over 27 seconds after Maginity.
Three more NMU runners placed within the top eight. Lamar Gordon, Talon Prusi, and Emma Sweeney finished sixth through eighth with times of 19:41.4, 19:42.2, and another 19:42.2 respectively.
Emma Moore and Dani VanLente also performed well, finishing in 12th and 13th positions just over the 20-minute mark.
The Wildcats are set to compete next at the Spartan Invite hosted by Michigan State in East Lansing on Friday, September 15 at 10 a.m.
