The NMU women's golf team commenced their participation in the GLIAC Championships at Stonehedge Golf Club, finishing the first day in sixth place with a score of +36 (324) after 18 holes. The competition requires teams to complete 36 holes of stroke play, with the top four advancing to medal match play. Currently, NMU trails fourth-place Saginaw Valley by 12 strokes.
The Wildcats recorded a stroke average of 3.50 on par 3s, 4.60 on par 4s, and 5.87 on par 5s. Their performance included 34 pars and five birdies, placing them fourth in birdie count.
Maya Hunter led NMU's efforts with a score of +5, 77, tying for 12th place and only four strokes behind the leader. She achieved a field-best of 14 pars during her round and maintained consistent play across different hole types.
Alyssa Yaggie and Hailey Bolander both scored +9, 81, tying for 24th place. Yaggie's even performance on par 3s was notable as she secured consecutive birdies on the par-three 11th and par-five 12th holes. Bolander contributed two birdies on the seventh and sixteenth holes.
Maggie Pietila completed her round with a score of +13, while Payton Donnelly ended with +23.
The second round will take place tomorrow morning to determine which teams advance to the match-play finals scheduled from Saturday evening to Sunday morning.
