The Northern Michigan University men's soccer team played against Purdue Northwest Pride, resulting in a 0-0 draw. This match concluded their home weekend in Marquette, Michigan. The Wildcats now hold a record of 2-8-2 overall and 1-5-1 in the GLIAC, while the Pride stands at 7-1-4 overall and 4-1-2 in the GLIAC.
Both teams attempted 11 shots each, with Purdue Northwest having five on target compared to Northern Michigan's four. Head coach Alex Fatovic expressed his satisfaction with the team's performance: "Extremely proud of our response today. That's a well-earned point off the 2nd-place team in PNW, holding the league leader in goals to zero chances and getting a shutout."
Fatovic acknowledged the missed opportunities but remained optimistic about his team's progress: "Of course, we are disappointed to not take all three points after the clear chances we had to win, however, this team continues to fight on and is finding its identity at the right time."
Key players for Northern Michigan included Triston Nelson, Kalvin Glodz, and Jaziel Sainz de Vilmorin, who each had shots on goal. Goalkeeper Bryce Beckley earned his first shutout with five saves.
During the first half, Triston Nelson had an early chance to score but was thwarted by Purdue's goalkeeper. The Wildcats outshot the Pride 8-4 by halftime. In the second half, both teams remained strong defensively. Despite attempts from both sides, including a late opportunity for freshman forward Jaziel Sainz de Vilmorin, neither team could break through.
Looking ahead, Northern Michigan will travel to face Saginaw Valley on Friday, October 13th.
