Head Coach Shane Richardson commented on the upcoming game: "We're going into this one to try to finish well, combine all the learning lessons, and put it all together."
Last weekend, NMU faced Saginaw Valley State University and suffered a 62-17 defeat. The Wildcats struggled with turnovers throughout the game, while Saginaw Valley amassed significant yardage both on the ground and through the air. Michael Love provided a highlight for NMU with a 90-yard kickoff return before halftime—the longest of the season for the team. Brock Franklin scored late in the second half with a five-yard touchdown run.
This loss left NMU winless at 0-10 for the season, while Saginaw Valley improved to an even record of 5-5.
Several players have made notable contributions despite the challenging season. Mitch Larkin leads his conference in total tackles with 107. Tyquan Cox ranks third in all-purpose yards within GLIAC and eighth in rushing yards per game. Sam Peiffer is tied for eighth in receiving touchdowns within GLIAC, while freshman linebacker Jax Hertel is tied for ninth in interceptions.
Northern State enters this weekend's matchup with a record of 4-6 overall within their conference NSIC and is currently experiencing a two-game losing streak. This will be their first encounter against NMU.
In their last outing, Northern State was defeated by Augustana with a score of 31-21 but managed to produce more offensive yards than their opponents. Quarterback Jacob Van Landingham threw for nearly 300 yards and accounted for three touchdowns—two passing and one rushing—while Hank Kraft contributed significantly on the ground.
