As the April 15 tax filing deadline nears, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has reissued a Public Service Announcement to warn consumers about tax-related identity theft. The announcement is accompanied by a video available on the Michigan Attorney General’s YouTube page, offering tips to prevent such fraud.

"Criminals are relentless in their pursuit of personal data and during tax-filing season, more so than any other time of year, financial and identifying information is flowing between filers and preparers," Nessel stated. "By following a few simple steps, consumers can significantly reduce their risk of falling victim to tax-related identity theft."

Tax-related identity theft involves using stolen personal information, such as Social Security numbers, to file fraudulent tax returns and claim refunds. Often, victims learn about the theft from the IRS. To protect themselves, consumers are advised not to disclose their SSN unless necessary and ensure they know how it will be protected. Filing taxes early and securely—either electronically or via mail directly from the post office—is recommended. Additionally, individuals should thoroughly research tax preparers before sharing personal information.

The IRS provides resources like the Taxpayer Guide to Identity Theft and advises that they will never call taxpayers with threats or ask for payment through gift cards or credit card information over the phone.

For those who suspect they are victims of identity theft, it is crucial to follow Federal Trade Commission guidelines and file a complaint. If an SSN is compromised in suspected tax-related identity theft cases, contacting the IRS Identity Protection Specialized Unit at 800-908-4490 is recommended. Victims should also respond promptly to IRS notices and complete Form 14039 Identity Theft Affidavit if needed.

"Anyone who believes they are a victim of tax-related identity theft should contact our office," Nessel added. "Our Consumer Protection team remains committed to investigating complaints and holding scammers accountable."
