The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is inviting proposals for the development of Healthy Community Zones in Chippewa and Saginaw counties, as well as the City of Detroit. This initiative aims to reduce racial disparities in health outcomes by supporting community-led projects focusing on food security, built environments, healthy children and youth, and social cohesion.

“Healthy Community Zones support communities as they work to reduce racial disparities and develop comprehensive long-term strategies addressing inequities,” said MDHHS Director Elizabeth Hertel. “By investing in the places where people raise their families, work and play, we can build an environment that promotes good health where all families can thrive.”

Funding is available to local public, private, or nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations, including those supporting tribes and people with disabilities. This marks the first instance of funding availability for Healthy Community Zones.

The grants will support programs aiming to increase food security, create active communities with healthy built environments, support thriving children and youth, and enhance social cohesion. A total of $9.1 million is available for distribution with individual awards ranging from $50,000 to $500,000. The state expects to grant approximately 30 awards. The program will commence in April 2025 and conclude in September 2026. Successful applicants may apply for renewals based on fund availability and performance.

A pre-application conference will be held on Monday, Oct. 7 at 10 a.m., lasting approximately two hours. It will provide details about the funding opportunity and instructions on using the EGrAMS system. The webinar can be accessed online; a recording will be available afterward.

Project directors must request access to the application through EGRAMS by 5 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 13. Grant applications are due electronically via EGrAMS by 3 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 20.

For more information or to apply, visit the EGrAMS website under "About EGrAMS" for the "Competitive Application Instructions" training manual or access the complete RFP under 'Current Grants' within Public Health Administration by selecting HCZ-2025.

Inquiries can be directed to MDHHS-HCZ@michigan.gov or through the Healthy Community Zones website.
