Northern Michigan men's soccer prepares for GLIAC opener against St. Cloud State

Northern Michigan University's men's soccer team is set to face the Huskies of St. Cloud State this Saturday in Minnesota. The Wildcats aim to improve their 3-2-1 record against the Huskies, who currently hold a 1-2 overall record and drew 2-2 with NMU in their last matchup during the 2023 regular season.

The match will take place on Saturday, September 21, at 8 p.m.

Head Coach Alex Fatovic commented on the upcoming game: "There's nothing that we're going to take into this [next] game lightly…We're just going to keep trying to do the same things that we've been doing and hopefully, that comes out with three points for us in the end."

The Wildcats have had a strong start to their season, boasting a 3-0-1 record with three shutouts in their first four games. Alessandro Scialanga leads the team with six points, having scored two goals and provided two assists. Scialanga's performance includes his first career Wildcat goal against Thomas More University last weekend. He also leads Wildcat field players in minutes played with 358.

Other key players include Quint Van Roij (356 minutes), Finn Van Den Berg (343 minutes), Tommaso Lami (333 minutes), and Xhoel Lutaj (333 minutes). Goalkeeper Nils Cedergren has recorded three clean sheets, tying for first nationwide in shutouts. Seven different Wildcats have scored throughout the last four games of the season, placing NMU second in the GLIAC with eight goals for and only two goals against.

St. Cloud State enters Saturday's match following a recent 7-2 victory over Upper Iowa University. Senior midfielder Philip Caputo was named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week after scoring three goals and earning three assists against Upper Iowa. Key players for St. Cloud State also include Mika Folstad, a fifth-year midfielder with seven points, and Owen Worsdell, a junior defender with five points. The Huskies have used three goalkeepers this season, conceding six goals so far.
