MPHI’s Advance Peace Initiative was recently featured in an opinion piece in the Lansing State Journal. The op-ed was titled “Viewpoint: Early results show investment in community violence intervention working in Lansing.”

The article discusses the state of gun violence prior to Advance Peace’s formation in 2022 and the current statistics on the impacts of Advance Peace’s work. The author, Julie Krupa, Assistant Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the School of Criminal Justice at MSU, commends the work Advance Peace has done thus far and shares her opinion that Advance Peace has shown early positive results in mediating gun violence.

“The results from the first 18 months are promising — and warrant the continuation and expansion of Advance Peace Lansing,” wrote Krupa.

Advance Peace has been working to expand into further sections of Lansing and into the neighboring city of East Lansing. The city council of East Lansing recently approved funding for the organization’s expansion of their Peacemaker Fellowship® program. The initiative’s planned expansions will ideally continue to yield positive results measured thus far.

“Fatal and non-fatal shootings were down in southwest Lansing, the primary focus of the fellowship, as well as citywide,” Krupa wrote. “The 15 peacemaker fellows themselves all remain alive, which in itself is a big achievement.”

The article shared more statistics showing that Advance Peace appears to have been achieving success in their goal to prevent gun violence.

“In the first 18 months, shooting fatalities in that sector fell by 20% (from 5 to 4) and non-fatal shootings declined by 25% (from 35 to 26) compared to the previous 18 months,” Krupa shared. “Citywide, the number of homicides declined by 59% and non-fatal shootings by 14%.”
