MPHI’s Public Health Initiative for Resourceful Education (PHIRE) launched on July 16, 2024. PHIRE is an MPHI initiative aimed at inspiring and empowering high school students of color to learn about public health and pursue public health careers.

“MPHI’s investment in creating a public health mentoring program for students of color is essential for improving diversity in public health and health care, challenging systemic racism, and addressing health inequities,” said Hope Rollins, Director of Education and Training.

The program includes five weeks of virtual learning surrounding public health. Coursework is structured by multifaceted topics that encompass public health, allowing students to explore their individual interests in the field.

Experts in public health from MPHI’s staff serve as mentors for the program, allowing students to learn from real public health professionals. In addition to the instructor-led material, students will also have group projects and assignments to help them apply the material from the course.

“Our MPHI mentors use their public health expertise and lived experiences to spark curiosity, build a strong pipeline of future public health professionals, and support underrepresented minority students’ academic and career success,” Rollins said.
