In response to the court approving a new State Senate districts map, ending the redistricting process and court case, Common Cause Michigan Executive Director Quentin Turner released the following statement:

“With the court approval of House and now Senate maps, this case has shown that a people-led redistricting process is the best course for transparency and fair maps. Instead of a partisan-driven process that we see in so many other states, the MICRC held an open process to fix these maps that allows voters of color to elect their candidates of choice to the state legislature.”

Common Cause Michigan was part of the Voters Not Politicians coalition that helped pass an independent citizen redistricting commission as part of Proposal 2 in 2018. The MICRC passed its first maps in December 2021, but a court struck down some House and Senate districts in December 2023. Common Cause Michigan encouraged the MICRC to fix their maps. New House districts were accepted in March. New Senate maps were just approved.

Common Cause Michigan is a nonpartisan, grassroots organization dedicated to upholding the core values of American democracy. The organization works to create open, honest, and accountable government that serves the public interest; promote equal rights, opportunity, and representation for all; and empower all people to make their voices heard in the political process.
