MARQUETTE, Mich. - After an impressive 22-10 season in which the Northern Michigan women's basketball team made the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the Round of 32, head coach Casey Thousand has announced the promotion of Jordan Sweeney to associate head coach ahead of the 2024-25 season.
This past season, the first for Sweeney at Northern, was notable. The Wildcats qualified for and won an NCAA Tournament game for the first time since 2019. The Wildcats also hosted a game in the GLIAC Tournament and reached the conference title game. Sweeney also helped guide the Green and Gold to a conference-leading mark in defensive rebounding and fewest turnovers per game.
"Jordan has earned this position through his dedication and experience on the court," Thousand said. "He understands everything that goes into a successful program behind the scenes. His knowledge of the game and his positive energy are a great fit within our program. Jordan wants our program to be better each day. This is why Jordan is being promoted to this position."
After spending five years as the UM-Dearborn women's basketball head coach, he created a new program standard. UM-Dearborn had its best two seasons in program history under Sweeney's leadership, including a record 24-7 during the 2018-19 season. The program achieved its first national ranking, climbing as high as #18. Rozhane Wells was also recognized as the program's first-ever All-American. Before being named women's coach, Sweeney was men's JV coach at UM-Dearborn for the 2015-16 season.
Before his tenure at UM-Dearborn, Sweeney was an assistant coach for Ferris State University's men's basketball program from 2013 to 2015. They won the conference tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA national tournament during the 2014-15 season.
A native of Cedarville, Michigan, Sweeney was a member of Cedarville High School's 2007 state championship team. He also played college basketball at Alpena Community College and graduated from Central Michigan University in 2013 with a degree in physical education.
