U.S. Senate candidate in Michigan, Mike Rogers, stated that the borders must be closed for the safety of the country in response to recent violence committed by illegal migrants. The Rogers campaign made the statement to Great Lakes Wire on June 25.

"Recent murders, rapes, and violence by illegals streaming through our borders unabated has brought death and mayhem to the front doors of American families," said Rogers. "With a shortage of police officers and the Democrats' lack of support for our police, it is only compounding the issue right here in Michigan. We must close the borders for our own safety and security."

Two illegal Venezuelan immigrants were charged with the murder of a 12-year-old girl in Texas, Fox News reported on June 20. Both men had been caught by U.S. Border Patrol at the time of their crossing and then were released into the interior of the country. A Maryland mother, Rachel Morin, was raped and murdered by Victor Martin Hernandez on August 5, 2023. Hernandez, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, was arrested this week for her murder. Hernandez allegedly came to the United States after murdering a woman in El Salvador.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the U.S. Border Patrol has arrested 10,337 individuals with existing criminal convictions illegally crossing to date in FY24; FY21 saw 10,763 arrests of criminal noncitizens.

Rogers represented Michigan in Congress from 2001-2015, according to his website. He served as Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee and is currently running for election to the U.S. Senate in Michigan.
