Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has urged residents to be vigilant and informed about the signs of human trafficking as the NFL Draft is set to draw hundreds of thousands of football fans to Detroit later this week.

"The NFL Draft will bring a lot of energy and excitement to Detroit, but it can also attract those wishing to exploit others," Nessel stated, emphasizing the importance of awareness and vigilance in protecting individuals most vulnerable to human trafficking.

Nessel highlighted some common signs that may indicate someone is a victim of human trafficking, including exhibiting signs of abuse, lack of control over personal documents or money, avoiding eye contact, and being fearful of the person they are with. She also pointed out that victims may not be able to communicate on their own behalf or ask for help.

The Attorney General's office has provided additional resources and tips on recognizing and responding to human trafficking for health care professionals, first responders, and hospitality workers who are more likely to come in direct contact with victims.

For those in need of assistance or who suspect someone may be a victim of human trafficking, Nessel encouraged reaching out to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center at 888-373-7888 or by texting 233733. The hotline operates 24/7, every day of the year, and all calls are confidential.

The initiative by Attorney General Dana Nessel aims to empower individuals to play a significant role in combating human trafficking and ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals, especially during large events such as the NFL Draft in Detroit.
