Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has reissued an alert regarding online ticket purchasing ahead of the NFL Draft, which is set to take place in Detroit for the first time since its inception in 1936. With the event expected to draw in hundreds of thousands of football fans, Nessel is warning residents about the potential for scams targeting ticket buyers.

"Unsuspecting fans could pay money for a ticket that was otherwise free or spend hundreds, or even thousands, on what turns out to be a phony screenshot of a ticket that doesn't exist or has previously been sold," Nessel cautioned.

Nessel highlighted the risks associated with purchasing tickets for the NFL Draft, urging fans to ensure they are not overpaying for tickets that are available for free through official channels. She emphasized the importance of using trusted sites to purchase authentic tickets to access VIP amenities.

The Attorney General also pointed out various ways bad actors can deceive ticket buyers, including through payment app scams involving popular peer-to-peer money apps like Apple Pay, Cash App, PayPal, and Venmo.

In light of these risks, Nessel provided tips to help consumers protect themselves when buying tickets online. She advised individuals to verify the legitimacy of vendors, conduct research on ticket sellers, use credit cards for online transactions, and shop securely on websites with the "https" protocol.

Consumers were encouraged to contact the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Team at 877-765-8388 to inquire about complaints regarding specific sellers and to utilize resources like the Better Business Bureau's national website for additional research.

As the NFL Draft approaches, Nessel's alert serves as a timely reminder for football fans to remain vigilant and cautious when purchasing tickets online to avoid falling victim to scams.
