WASHINGTON, DCU.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) on June 16 released a video recognizing June 19th, 2023 as the 158th anniversary of Juneteenth National Independence Day. “Juneteenth” commemorates the day the last remaining African American slaves in Galveston, Texas learned of their emancipation.

“Juneteenth National Independence Day commemorates the conclusion of one of our nation’s most painful chapters… While we celebrate the meaningful steps we have taken towards justice, equality, and opportunity, we must remain vigilant in our pursuit of a better future,” said Senator Peters. “Together, we must continue to build a nation that truly represents our founding ideas of liberty and justice for all.”

Below is the text of Senator Peters’ remarks:

“Juneteenth National Independence Day commemorates the conclusion of one of our nation’s most painful chapters.

“We established Juneteenth as a federal holiday to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States, reflect on our history, and recognize the critical work that remains.

“While we celebrate the meaningful steps we have taken towards justice, equality, and opportunity, we must remain vigilant in our pursuit of a better future.

“Juneteenth is a reminder of where we stand in that fight. “And while we have made significant strides, there is no question that systemic inequalities persist. From inequalities in our criminal justice system to attacks on voting rights — to health, education, economic disparities, we have so much more important work to do.

“Together, we must continue to build a nation that truly represents our founding ideas of liberty and justice for all.

“Juneteenth is a day of remembrance and celebration. But it is also an opportunity to reaffirm our collective commitment to building a more equal and just future for every one of us.”
