Recently, Mid Michigan College re-committed its support to employing guardsmen, reservists, and veterans.

Representatives Lori Fassett, Associate Vice President of Human Resources, and Tammy Alvaro, Director of Student Life & Veteran Resources, were aboard the US Coast Guard Cutter Biscayne Bay out of St. Ignace at a recent event held by the Committee for Employee Support Of The Guard and Reserve (ESGR).

“Mid was invited to attend due to our commitment to supporting and valuing the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve,” said Fassett.

At the event, Fassett signed a statement of support pledge that commits the College to fully recognizing, honoring, and complying with the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act.

The pledge also ensures that managers and supervisors will have the tools they need to effectively manage employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve, and that the College will appreciate the values, leadership, and unique skills service members bring to the workforce.

“The College also committed to encouraging opportunities to hire guardsmen, reservists, and veterans where qualified,” noted Fassett. “And that the organization will continually recognize and support our country’s service members and their families, in peace, in crises, and in war.”

This pledge is the cornerstone of ESGR’s effort to gain and maintain employer support for the Guard and Reserve. The pledge aims to increase employer support by encouraging employers, like Mid Michigan College, to act as advocates for employee participation in the military. Supportive employers are critical to maintaining the strength and readiness of the Nation’s Guard and Reserve units.

“We’re honored to serve those who serve all of us,” shared Fassett. “As a former member of the National Guard myself, I’m happy to say that my employer is among those setting an example for how we can support guardsmen, reservists, and veterans.”
