Reproductive freedom has been secured in Michigan after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) signed an executive order.
According to Michigan.gov, the directive allows state entities to examine reproductive rights within their territory and bring forth concepts that can help enhance protections for reproductive health care protected by the Michigan Constitution.
State agencies will also work with the attorney general to tackle these issues while making sure public information is relevant and adheres to the recent constitutional amendment.
Whitmer took action before reproductive freedom was solidified in the Michigan Constitution with the passage of Proposal 3 on Dec. 24.
“In November, Michiganders of every background made history and sent a clear message: that a woman must be able to make her own health care decisions without the interference of politicians in Lansing,” Whitmer told Michigan.gov. “Today, my administration is taking the first step to support and protect this fundamental right for every Michigander. I will continue to use every tool in my toolbox to defend Michiganders’ reproductive freedom, and work with anyone to build a thriving, competitive Michigan we can be proud to pass on to future generations.”
Representatives from ACLU Michigan, Michigan Voices, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan, reproductive health care providers, and women who participated in roundtable discussions the governor held on abortion access were on hand as Whitmer signed the directive.
