The City of Ypsilanti is proud to share that it has received a Silver Certification from the Walk Friendly Communities organization. This marks the first the City has achieved this level of certification, advancing from an Honorable Mention.
This designation recognizes the City’s commitment to creating and sustaining walkable, safe, pedestrian-friendly environments. The Walk Friendly Communities program especially recognized the City’s recently updated nonmotorized transportation plan, strong top-level commitment to walkability and pedestrian safety, and an urban environment with sidewalks and short block lengths that contributes to walkability.
“This award is like a big hug from a mentor for a job well done,” stated Bob Krzewinski, chair of the Non-Motorized Advisory Committee. “At the same time, it is also like having that mentor telling you your future looks great if you keep working hard and pursue your dreams. We’ll keep working to achieve that gold!”
From visionary plans to completing projects, Ypsilanti also thanks all of its partners for making the City more walkable. Examples of this include the Washtenaw County Parks & Recreation Commission partnering with the City to complete Border To Border Trail projects in Frog Island Park and the Grove Road I-94 bridge crossing. Another partner would be the Michigan Department of Transportation which is currently working with the City to improve non-motorized facilities associated with State highways in the City, including a much-needed pathway on Huron Street where it crosses over I-94.
The City has a continuing commitment to walkability. Walkability and accessibility support public health, climate sustainability, and resiliency, and can help members of the community save money at a time when gas prices are on the rise.
Walk Friendly Communities (WFC) is a national recognition program developed to encourage towns and cities across the U.S. to establish or recommit to a high priority for supporting safer walking environments. The WFC program recognizes communities that are working to improve a wide range of conditions related to walking, including safety, mobility, access, and comfort.
The City of Ypsilanti has 20,000 residents, spans 4.5 square miles, and is known for its rich history, Huron River parks, and as the home of Eastern Michigan University.
