BCPD places lieutenant on leave after off-duty crash

Police 04

The Battle Creek Police Department has placed Lt. Jim Martens on administrative leave, after he was involved in an off-duty car crash outside the city on Sunday.

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department responded to the crash at 3:54 a.m. Sunday on M-66, south of M Drive South. The CCSD has continued to investigate the case. Martens, who was driving and alone in the car, suffered multiple significant, but non-life-threatening injuries. Only one vehicle was involved in the crash.

Due to the nature of the crash, and Martens’ injuries, deputies believe alcohol was a factor. Deputies secured a warrant for a blood test, and the results will take a few weeks. CCSD informed the BCPD that Martens is cooperating with the investigation.

BCPD Chief Jim Blocker also ordered an internal investigation.

“I have said in the past, we hire from the human race, not the superhuman one,” Blocker said. “I will ensure this employee receives the help they need. We also cannot make excuses, nor hide from the fact that we must abide by the law, set the example, and live our values all the time.”

The investigation continues, and the BCPD will not release further information at this time.
