Cotakarttrack2

City of Kalamazoo issued the following announcement on Mar 2.

Partnership Creates Opportunity for Middle School Students to Compete at WMU Esports Arena

Kzoo Parks and Western Michigan University’s (WMU) Esports will host a Mario Kart Racing League this spring for middle schoolers. Students will compete weekly for points, racing their favorite character in Mario Kart for Nintendo Switch at WMU’s Esports Arena in the Little Theatre Building on east campus (798 Oakland Drive).

Registration is available online at www.kzooparks.org/mariokart or in-person at the Kzoo Parks office (251 Mills St) through Friday, March 11. The league will run for six weeks from March 14 to April 20 with a postseason tournament on Saturday, April 23. There will be no programming on March 28 and 29 during spring break.

Students can register for one of four session options: Mondays at 5:30 p.m., Mondays at 6:45 p.m., Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m., or Wednesdays at 6:45 p.m. Each week students will race eight times on two tracks during their hour-long session. Points will be recorded throughout the league to place racers in flights for the postseason tournament.

Registration is $68 for City of Kalamazoo residents and $75 for non-residents. Recreation Program Assistance is available to city residents through Kalamazoo Friends of Recreation. Residents can visit www.friendsofrec.org/apply to learn about program assistance, what's covered, who's eligible, and what the benefits are. If using financial assistance, residents will need to register for the program in person at the Kzoo Parks office at 251 Mills Street.

This is the second session of this new Esports program, which was launched in the Fall of 2021 with a Super Smash Bros League.

“Esports has been gaining popularity for several years and we’re thrilled to be able to offer these new programs for youth in our community,” said Pete Aerts, Recreation Coordinator at Kzoo Parks. “It’s a great way for students to make friends and connect with others in a friendly competition. WMU Esports has been such a great partner and their support makes these new programs possible.”

Western Michigan University’s COVID-19 Policies will be followed while at the Esports Arena. For questions or assistance, please call 269-337-8521 or email kzooparks@kalamazoocity.org
