Friends of the Rouge Needs Volunteer Citizen Scientists

Volunteer

City of Farmington recently issued the following announcement.

Outdoors enthusiasts are needed to help determine the health of the Rouge River by collecting Stoneflies. Friends of the Rouge is hosting its annual Winter Stonefly Search on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2022.  This is a unique opportunity to learn about what lives under the ice in local Rouge streams while giving back by helping collect data on the health of the river.

Interested volunteers must pre-register online or contact Sally at (734) 927-4904 or spetrella@therouge.org. The registration deadline is Jan. 14, 2022.

Registered volunteers are assigned to teams and meet in the field at their first sampling site. All participants must be fully vaccinated against covid or have a negative covid test within 48 hours of the event. The event is also limited to groups of six or less and is all outdoors.  There also will be a “Stonefly Primer” course held via Zoom on Jan. 13 at 6pm to prepare volunteers for the Jan. 22nd search.

The Stonefly Search is part of Friends of the Rouge’s long-term monitoring program that includes the Spring and Fall Bug Hunts.  It is supported by the the Alliance of Rouge Communities.

The Rouge River covers 467 square miles in three counties and 48 communities in the metropolitan Detroit area and is home to 1.35 million people.  Additional information: www.therouge.org.
