Participating in Operation Safe Stop

Bus

Kent County Sheriff's Office issued the following announcement on Oct 22.

“Participating in Operation Safe Stop is a great opportunity for us to bring awareness to school bus safety laws by increasing our presence on local bus routes and educating motorists on the importance of sharing the road with school buses safely.”

-Sheriff LaJoye-Young

Due to their size, buses have different limitations than smaller vehicles. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when driving around school buses.

Your ability to see in front of a school bus can be limited. If a bus stops in front of you, do not pass it. There could be pedestrians crossing in front of the bus that you cannot see from your vantage point. School buses travel at slower speeds, so be ready to hit the brakes to maintain a safe distance. If you are driving behind a school bus, leave additional space between your vehicle and the bus, so you have more time to stop when the bus stops. Lastly and importantly, never text and drive, and keep your focus on the road ahead of you.
