Michigan's small businesses are the hardest hit by COVID-19 shutdowns in the nation

Michigan small businesses have been hit harder than other states by government-ordered closures, according to data from a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics survey.

Small businesses in the state have been negatively impacted by COVID-19 pandemic closures, Michigan Capitol Confidential reported.

Statistics from the Bureau show that 32% of the state's private-sector businesses have had to close due to the government-ordered shutdowns. Michigan was ranked as the hardest hit, with Pennsylvania coming in second at 30%, according to Michigan Capitol Confidential.

South Dakota's small businesses, however, were the least affected by government lockdowns, ranking at just under 6% closures, with the average in the nation coming in at just under 19%.

The survey from the Bureau asked business owners about how they have been experiencing the coronavirus pandemic, which allowed data for closures to be collected.

"The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has developed new data on how U.S. businesses changed their operations and employment since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic through September 2020. This information, in combination with data collected by other current BLS surveys, will aid in understanding how businesses responded during the pandemic," the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said on its website.
