Michigan Secretary of State issued the following announcement on Dec. 9.

The Michigan Department of State was awarded the 2020 Students Learn Students Vote (SLSV) Coalition Award for exemplifying the SLSV Guiding Principle of Collaborating for Greater Impact.

“Students of all ages and their organizations, schools, colleges and universities across the our state have been crucial partners with more than 1,600 clerks, tens of thousands of election workers and countless other nonpartisan organizations that helped Michigan carry out its safest, most secure election ever, that drew record-breaking turnout,” said Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson. “Democracy is a team sport, and I am so impressed with and grateful to the many students and others who showed up to play for Michigan on Nov. 3.”

To recognize the extraordinary efforts of organizations, campuses and local leaders, for the first time ever the SLSV Coalition recognized organizations and campuses that exemplify the SLSV Coalition’s Guiding Principles.

“We know that there is power in numbers. As a coalition, we believe in rising together, giving credit where credit is due and letting the voices, needs and lived experiences of communities guide our solution building,” Clarissa Unger, Director of the SLSV Coalition said. “The Michigan Department of State perfectly exemplifies the principle of Collaborating for Greater Impact.”

The Students Learn Students Vote (SLSV) Coalition is the national hub and largest nonpartisan network in the United States dedicated to increasing college student voter participation. The Coalition convenes and connects partners, campuses and students with each other and with resources and programming towards achieving a vision of ensuring that every student has easy and equal access to participate in every election. They use data, relationships, celebration and easy-to-follow planning structures, to help campus and local leaders register and turnout more student voters every year.
