MICHIGAN, DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT, GREAT LAKES & ENERGY: EGLE sets virtual public meeting to discuss application status for US Ecology Detroit South hazardous waste operating license renewal

Michigan, Department of Environment, Great Lakes & Energy issued the following announcement on Dec. 1.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), will host a virtual public meeting to give community members an opportunity to learn about the license renewal application submitted by US Ecology Detroit South, and the EGLE license review process. US Ecology Detroit South, also known as EQ Detroit, is a licensed hazardous waste treatment and storage site located at 1923 Frederick Street in Detroit.

This meeting, set for 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10, will take place electronically due to the constraints associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

“EGLE is committed to engaging with the community early and often, beyond the requirements of the laws and regulations, to ensure transparency in our licensing processes. We want to hear from the community about how we can best meet the needs of community members throughout this process,” said Al Taylor, hazardous waste section manager at EGLE’s Materials Management Division.

Hazardous waste site licenses must be renewed at least every 10 years. This allows for a chance to affirm accuracy of site information in the license. The renewal process gives EGLE an opportunity to update site information, review operations and improve the license. It also gives EGLE an opportunity to clarify license requirements, enhancing the license and the protections it provides to the community. EGLE is currently reviewing the Application for the USE-DS Site.

The Dec. 10 meeting will include a presentation covering site operations and EGLE’s licensing process. A question-and-answer session with EGLE staff will follow.

Individuals interested in attending can pre-register or join when the meeting starts without registering. Those without internet access can phone in, by calling 213-787-0529 using the conference code, 881478.

To learn more in advance of the meeting, go to www.Michigan.gov/USEcologyDetroitSouth and subscribe to the site mailing list to receive and updates on progress related to EGLE’s oversight and application review for operation at US Ecology Detroit South.

Individuals needing language assistance or accommodations for effective participation at the meeting should contact Andrew Bertapelle at 517-290-3813 to request language, mobility, visual, hearing, translation and/or other assistance.
