CITY OF EAST GRAND RAPIDS: 4th of July Celebration Update

Update450

City of East Grand Rapids issued the following announcement on June 4

Each year, we are proud to host our 4th of July Celebration. Residents, visitors and the greater West Michigan community gather in East Grand Rapids to partake in all the fun activities including the Reeds Lake Trail Blazer, Independence Day Parade and the fireworks show.

However, due to the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 and in accordance with Gov. Whitmer’s Michigan Safe Start Plan, the City will not be able to host its traditional 4th of July Celebration this year, including the Reeds Lake Trail Blazer.

Under the six-part plan, the State is not expected to fully open for several months. We’re currently in stage four, during which we are limited to holding gatherings under 100 people. Knowing this, we cannot in good conscience hold an event that gathers thousands of people in such close proximity.

Please know this decision was not made lightly. While we are all longing to transition back into our normal lives, keeping all participants and those planning for this day safe and healthy remains a top priority for the City.

We are grateful for all the sponsors and donors who have been critical in the success of this event each year.

While we are certainly disappointed not to hold our day-long celebration, we look forward to hosting next year’s event. Stay tuned, however, as our team members are looking at alternative ways to honor our nation’s birthday safely.

You can reach out to Parks & Rec. Director Fed Bunn at fbunn@eastgr.org with any questions or concerns you have regarding this decision.
