State Rep. Jack O’Malley (R-Lake Ann) has testified before the House Military, Veterans and Homeland Security Committee on behalf of his bipartisan measure to improve school bus safety in Michigan.

He testified before the committee on Oct. 22.

“Too many motorists, whether it be distracted driving or improper knowledge of the requirement to stop for a school bus when its stop sign is activated, fail to stop as children are boarding and exiting,” O’Malley said in a press release. “This has led to somber stories in many Michigan communities over the years. We can do better, and this plan is an important step in the right direction to improve school bus safety."

O’Malley’s proposal, the lead measure of a five-bill package, stipulates who is and isn’t allowed on a school bus and imposes more serious penalties on those who board buses without permission.

“Through stricter penalties, increased surveillance and further education, our plan is going to significantly reduce the number of motorists who fail to stop for school buses on our roadways,” O’Malley said.
