Officials in Cayuga County have lifted state of emergency declarations that were placed on Little Sodus Bay and Lake Ontario more than four months ago due to rising water levels.
“The International Joint Commission, which oversees shared boundary waters between the U.S. and Canada, reports lake levels are now at 247.41 feet,” according to an article by The Citizen on Aug. 31. “At its peak, the lake was over 249 feet. Tens of thousands of sandbags were deployed along Cayuga County's portion of the shoreline to protect against flooding.”
The state of emergency was declared on May 11 out of concern for public safety. As part of the declaration, the county issued a no wake zone for boats within 500 feet of the shore. In line with the emergency orders being lifted, the no wake order has also been lifted.
“Higher than normal water levels for this time of year still exist,” the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page states. “Please continue to watch for floating debris and any hazardous conditions. Please continue to respect the shoreline with appropriate speeds and use caution if you are boating on any water way.”
