Assistant Attorney General John L. Thurber has been honored with the Theodore W. Swift Civility Award by the Ingham County Bar Association, according to an announcement from Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel. The award is given to a member of the association who demonstrates civility in their professional interactions and upholds the principles and traditions of the legal profession.
Attorney General Nessel stated, “For nearly three decades, John has shown professionalism, civility and an unwavering commitment to the rule of law. His work has made a lasting impact on the State of Michigan, and his career embodies the very best of public service. I congratulate him on this well-deserved honor.”
Thurber holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Kenyon College (1990) and a law degree from the University of Detroit School of Law (1993). He joined the State Bar of Michigan in November 1993. Since March 1996, Thurber has worked for the Department of Attorney General and currently serves as assistant attorney general within its Alcohol & Gambling Enforcement Division. During his 29-year tenure, he has primarily represented the Michigan Department of Corrections in federal court, handling numerous cases across Michigan and presenting arguments before the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.
