The Michigan House Judiciary Committee has reviewed two bills, House Bills 5079 and 5080, that aim to increase penalties for forcibly disarming law enforcement officers or causing injury during such incidents. State Representative Mike Mueller sponsored the legislation.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel expressed support for the bills, stating, "The brave men and women of law enforcement put their lives on the line each day to protect us. When someone tries to disarm an officer, it endangers that individual and the safety of everyone they’ve sworn an oath to defend. This legislation strengthens our ability to hold violent offenders fully accountable, and I urge the House to pass this legislative package swiftly."
The proposed legislation is intended to enhance protections for police officers and ensure that individuals who attempt to disarm law enforcement are subject to stricter consequences.
