Turan West, a 30-year-old resident of Saginaw, has been sentenced to 162 months in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. The sentencing was announced by U.S. Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon Jr., with James Deir, Special Agent in Charge of the Detroit Field Office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF), also participating in the announcement.

U.S. District Court Judge Thomas L. Ludington issued the sentence after West entered a guilty plea to being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Court documents indicate that in August 2024, Michigan State Police Troopers stopped a vehicle in Saginaw where West was sitting in the passenger seat. When troopers asked the driver to exit the car, West moved into the driver’s seat and attempted to drive away while troopers tried to intervene. He subsequently crashed into an ambulance that had pulled over to assist at the scene. Authorities found that West had a handgun inside the vehicle and noted he had multiple prior felony convictions.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms led the investigation after taking over from Michigan State Police. Assistant United States Attorney William Orr prosecuted the case.

"This investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, after being adopted from the Michigan State Police. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney William Orr," according to officials.
