Common Cause Michigan has begun a statewide digital advertising campaign urging residents not to sign voting-related ballot initiatives. The organization warns that signing such petitions could put voters’ rights at risk.

According to Common Cause Michigan, two current ballot initiatives, if approved, could result in eligible U.S. citizens losing their right to vote in the state. The campaign may expand to include in-person outreach and additional advertising if necessary.

Quentin Turner, Executive Director of Common Cause Michigan, said, “The vast majority of Michiganders believe our elections are fair, but an extreme minority wants to take away our right to vote and is misleading us on their targets. It’s a trap. Don’t fall for it.” Turner added, “Both of these poorly named ballot initiatives would take away U.S. citizen’s right to vote unless they slogged through tons of costly red tape. This is not abstract; we know from our members directly that some would lose their right to vote as U.S. citizens. We will educate as many Michiganders as needed that their friends and neighbors would be affected if this makes the ballot. Don’t sign your name.”

The ads are funded by the Voters Not Politicians Ballot Committee with regulated funds. Common Cause Michigan stated it does not disclose its direct ad strategy or campaign budgets.
