Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has issued a statement following the federal government's decision to temporarily halt new restrictions on public benefit programs. Nessel expressed concerns over the policy changes but acknowledged the agreement as crucial for maintaining access to essential services like Title X and mental health support in Michigan.
"While this change in agency policy remains deeply concerning, this agreement with the federal government ensures that critical public benefits programs – including Title X and mental health services – remain available to Michigan residents," said Nessel. She further emphasized her commitment to contesting any unlawful measures that could withdraw necessary support from those in need.
The temporary pause comes after Nessel and 20 other attorneys general filed a lawsuit against the federal government's proposed reinterpretation of eligibility criteria under the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA). The U.S. Departments of Justice, Health and Human Services, Education, and Labor have agreed not to enforce these policy changes in the plaintiff states until at least September 3, 2025. Additionally, no penalties or enforcement actions will be taken against individuals complying with previous PRWORA guidelines during this time.
