Today, the Michigan Commission on Agriculture and Rural Development announced the approval of $400,000 in grants from the Food and Agriculture Investment Program (FAIP). The grants, provided by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD), are aimed at enhancing facilities, increasing capacity, and creating new jobs in the state.

"The Food and Agriculture Investment Program is a cornerstone of MDARD's economic development strategy," said MDARD Director Tim Boring. "Today's grants advance MDARD's broader goals of strengthening Michigan's food supply chain, creating more economic opportunities for Michigan growers, and giving Michigan families more access to locally grown foods."

A $175,000 grant will support Hildebrand Fruit, LLC's $4 million expansion project in Berrien Springs. This project aims to double the square footage of their packing operation and create two new positions. Mike Hildebrand, Owner of Hildebrand Fruit, LLC stated: "Our family is so appreciative of this support from MDARD. In 2027, we will celebrate 100 years as a family farm...This grant will help us position ourselves for the next generation."

The City of Oak Park will receive a $225,000 grant for its Commercial Food and Event HUB Project. This initiative involves constructing a new facility that includes a year-round farmers market space and a shared-use kitchen. Erik Tungate, City Manager said: "This grant will more than double Oak Park’s current Farmers Market capacity...We're thrilled to partner with MDARD to strengthen support for local farmers."

Since Fiscal Year 2019, MDARD has awarded over $5.7 million in FAIP grants as part of its efforts to promote agricultural prosperity in Michigan.
